When maritime connectivity is discussed, cruise ships are often the first association: floating hotels where thousands of guests expect connectivity to work as seamlessly as it does on land.

However, the maritime sector is far broader and more diverse.

From luxury yachts and cruise ships to naval vessels, dredging ships, ferries and inland waterways, every vessel has its own operational requirements, technical constraints and safety challenges. Over the years, Multicap has gained experience across a wide range of maritime environments and has learned that a ship cannot simply be treated as a building that happens to float.

A vessel is a complete, self-contained ecosystem, with an infrastructure and operational reality unlike almost any other environment.

Next to these, we also worked on countless shore to off-shore projects over distances of over 35km for radar towers, windmill islands etc.

A unique environment requires a specialised approach

Ships combine large amounts of metal with compact spaces, multiple decks, technical compartments, narrow corridors and watertight doors or airlocks. This physical structure has a major impact on wireless signal propagation.

A Wi-Fi signal that performs reliably in an open environment may be heavily affected on board by metal bulkheads, engine rooms, heavy electro motors, pipes, enclosed compartments and complex passageways. The combination of reflections, signal attenuation, interference and limited propagation paths requires a carefully engineered design based on measurements and a detailed understanding of the actual environment.

The operational context also changes continuously. A vessel may operate in isolation at sea for days before entering a busy port environment containing numerous wireless systems and external networks. During a single journey, it may also pass through multiple countries, regions and regulatory zones.

For that reason, we do not design maritime networks based solely on standard rules or assumptions. We take into account the vessel’s physical construction, applications, operational routes and specific connectivity requirements.

Wi-Fi as the digital backbone on board

Although the physical environment is unique, many of the applications on board are similar to those found in other industries.

Wi-Fi can provide a common infrastructure for:

Always knowing where people and assets are

A ship can be a complex and difficult environment to navigate. Multiple decks, technical areas, similar-looking corridors and enclosed compartments can make it challenging for visitors, passengers and even crew members to understand their location and find the correct route.

Real-time location technology provides valuable support.

Location solutions can make crew members, visitors, passengers, vehicles and critical assets visible throughout the vessel. This enables personnel to be located more quickly, resources to be used more efficiently and the right assistance to be directed to the right location without delay.

Location information can also add significant value to maintenance and operational processes. Technicians can be guided directly to a malfunctioning installation, while teams can quickly identify the location of specific equipment or personnel.

 

Intelligent wayfinding and safe guidance

Wayfinding on a ship is more than a convenience.

During normal operations, visitors and passengers can be guided to their cabin, restaurant, meeting location or another destination. Dynamic lighting and location information can provide intuitive guidance without requiring users to interpret complex deck layouts or extensive signage.

During an emergency, however, guidance becomes a critical safety function.

Ships are divided into compartments that may be sealed in response to fire, flooding or other incidents. As a result, a route that is safe at one moment may later become inaccessible or dangerous.

Dynamic light lines can adapt evacuation routes in real time based on the location and nature of an incident. People can be actively guided away from hazardous areas and directed towards the safest available exit or assembly point.

The infrastructure therefore does more than indicate where an exit is located. It actively guides people along a safer route.

 

Fast communication and alerting, wherever the crew may be

Crew members operate throughout the vessel: on the bridge, in technical areas, engine rooms, across multiple decks or in external work zones.

When an incident occurs, the right people must be informed quickly and clearly. An alarm that is visible only at one central location provides limited value when the required personnel are working elsewhere.

Our solutions can centrally collect, process and distribute alarms through multiple communication channels. Notifications can be displayed on smartphones, mobile devices, screens, applications or through intelligent lighting.

By linking alarms with location information, teams can immediately see where an incident is occurring and identify which personnel may be nearby.

In critical environments, such as naval vessels or ships operating in high-risk areas, this combination of communication, location awareness and rapid alerting can play an important role in coordinating and protecting both crew and vessel.

Reliable connections between shore and vessel

For dredging operations and offshore projects, communication extends beyond the vessel itself.

Dredging ships often operate within the same area for extended periods, while the operational zone continuously changes and expands. Reliable communication is required between the vessel, shore-based facilities, technical teams and other operational locations.

Multicap has deployed Voice-over-Wi-Fi networks in and around supporting facilities and established wireless links spanning several kilometres to vessels and installations on the water. These connections can remain reliable across changing distances, angles and orientations.

Because the dredging area evolves continuously, the network infrastructure must be flexible enough to evolve with it. Wireless links provide a scalable solution that can be adapted more quickly than traditional cabling.

Connectivity for fixed routes and changing locations

Not every vessel follows the same operational pattern.

A ferry generally operates along a fixed route but may have only a limited number of locations from which a connection to the vessel can be established. The distance from shore can be considerable, and the available connection must remain reliable throughout the journey.

Here too, every situation requires a specific design. Antenna locations, coverage, capacity, redundancy and the available shore infrastructure must all be considered together to create a stable connection.

For other vessels, location changes continuously. Inland waterway vessels, for example, travel through multiple countries and mobile network regions. By combining the vessel’s real-time location with information about available cellular networks, the active connection can be automatically aligned with the most suitable SIM card or provider.

This can reduce unnecessary roaming costs without compromising connectivity availability.
